It’s never too late! IETC – Education for Girls

IETC - Education for GirlsINFAQ Education & Training Centre (IETC) was established in August 2003 with a purpose to train the teachers for Korangi Academy. As the Centre sailed through its journey it experienced avenues which could lead the challenging tasks that lay ahead. It found out that the environment existing in the community needed INFAQ’s attention and support to induct them into the mainstream of the society.

IETC accepted the challenge and started to broaden its approach and undertakings for the benefit of girls who missed the opportunity for formal education. INFAQ Education & Training Centre (IETC) thus became the forum to provide education and training to females who have since crossed the age of normal mainstream school system. These girls were drop-outs for social or financial reasons and could not continue studies beyond few years. Soon 400 girls registered to go through the mill of IETC. To enlighten the lives of these young women, IETC needed to educate them and develop their personalities and outlook to make them an effective member of society within their communities.

Learn more about IETC

IETC now operates following three sub-entities, all independently recognized by the respective Regulatory Boards of the Government of Sindh:

  1. CDSS Senior Girls School
  2. CDSS Intermediate Girls College
  3. CDSS Elementary Teacher’s Training Centre

CDSS Senior Girls School

At the Senior Girls School, the entrants go through a three years rigorous course of studies and are prepared to appear in the Secondary Board Examination. Tireless efforts of the teachers and students resulted in high percentage of success in the Board Examination. This scheme has proved to be a great success.

CDSS Intermediate Girls College

The girls are now also being prepared for Higher Secondary School Certificate examination of the Board.

Graduate Studies

A pilot project for B. Com studies was initiated when the first batch of 8 girls passed the Intermediate examination with good grades in 2007. The students were quite willing to continue their studies in the same centre with the same team and this provided a great impetus, encouragement and motivation to the IETC team. The team and the students are quite confident for the positive results, Insha’Allah.

In these courses the aim is not only to give teachers training but also to groom the participants and develop their confidence so that they are able to work productively in any field of life.

IT Courses

While computer study is an integral part of all the courses, in 2008 the Centre started IT Course for the community girls also. The duration of the course is three months and the participants are introduced to basic computer skills. However an in-depth exposure to MS Office is undertaken during the three months course. The classes are held thrice a week in the afternoon. The monthly tuition fee is Rs. 250. This course is also gaining popularity amongst the young girls and they find it exciting and challenging.

Currently there are 160 students doing different courses in the centre. There are 12 teachers and 4 members of support staff.

Community Development

A pilot counseling project was started from July 26, 2007 with the following objectives:

  • Counseling used as a change agent to have a positive impact on the community.
  • Making community members aware of the measures that should be taken to improve health and hygiene.
  • Encourage skill learning and using these skills for economic advantage.
  • Encourage education, particularly amongst women.
  • Stimulate self–reliance.

Trip to NASA Space Camp

Nasa Space Camp 1I am Ahmed Hafeez student of class metric. I was not good at English when I joined English Access Micro scholarship Program .Afterwards I was able to speak in a good manner and I was able to write. My access co-coordinator gave my name for USA NASA SPACE CAMP 2015 as an applicant of it.

I was firstly interviewed by Mr. Usman Hashmi. I was also selected for the final interview in US CONSULATE KARACHI. I was happy to be there that I am capable for the final interview. Only 15 students were selected for the final interview and I was also among those 15 students. I was proud that I was among those 15 students. We were interviewed by two Americans. It was a great moment. On next day I got a call that I am selected for this program. I was happy and excited.

I traveled to Islamabad for visa interview. By the grace of God I got my visa. In Islamabad I met with other campers too and it was great to be with them. Only 24 students were selected from all over the Pakistan.  On eighth of August we departed from Islamabad to Doha then to Chicago and Chicago to Huntsville, Alabama. In Alabama I had my space camp and it was pleasure for me to be there. I was treated there as a real astronaut. I got missions there just like real astronauts. I got my flight suit .On my flight suit I got my name tag. I had three missions there

  • Alpha mission
  • Bravo mission
  • Whole day extended mission

The missions were hard and my responsibility was MISSION SPECIALIST. My job was to repair satellite. I was wearing a very heavy suit and it was hot. It was hard and I had to work on a satellite

  1. To design a rocket and to have safe landing
  2. To purify water
  3. To save egg from 1400 heat.

Nasa Space Camp 2It was hard for me but I did it. I succeeded in all of my projects and I was awarded outstanding camper award. It was a pleasure for me. On fourteenth of August we had our graduation ceremony. We got our certificate and were graduated from NASA.

Then we went to Washington D.C by bus.  It was a beautiful day we visited White House, Abraham Lincoln’s Memorial, Pakistan Embassy, Us Department of State, Air and Space Museum .I was also interviewed by a Balochi channel. On 18 of August we departed from Washington to Doha and to Islamabad and said good bye to America. I am thankful to my school that they gave us such an opportunity   and to i-earn that they gave such chance for the great experience. I will always be missing   those days and friends. This trip connected me with thousands of people. Now coming back from this trip I am a better human. Thanks to my school and   i- earn .I will always be missing my friends or campers I spent great time with them.

Reflection by Students

Sohail Khan

A Social Activist and founder of a School.

After passing out from KA, He used all the skills he learned from the school to serve community. Sohail was given a chance to represent his country in United States.

He followed the footsteps of Agha Hasan Abedi who was a great banker and philanthropist.  Sohail wanted to serve the community by spreading light of education in the dark area of community to achieve his goal and for completion of his wish; He established a school “The Noor-e-Illm School” where he is providing free education to children who are unable to afford their school fee.

Haris Hashmi

Founder of FEY (Foundation for Empowering Youth) and a Public Speaker

If you want to change any nation just target its youth; this was what made Haris Hashmi to launch an organization which empowers youth. He is engaged in several community projects with a hope that we are the one who take the first step to change the community from worst to best and from dark to light.

Korangi Academy also teaches the art of speaking. As Evan Esar said “Public Speaking is the art of diluting a two minute idea with a two hour vocabulary”, Haris Hashmi as a public speaker conducted several sessions and still using his art of speaking to influence and bring some positive change in the community.

Babar Ali

A Film Maker

Babar Ali was one of the 5 students from Pakistan who were sent to NASA United States, He was brilliantly trained as an astronaut. He represented his country Pakistan.

Korangi Academy teaches the importance of visuals and their impact on the minds of peoples, as we all know that vision is more powerful than listening, Babar Ali took this idea and started using his skill with the camera and made so many short films carrying morals in them. He went to NCA (National College of Arts) Lahore, where his skills were more polished he is now studying in the department of Visual Studies in Karachi University. His first short film was “Zindagi” in which he depicted the condition of our city and how thousands of lives are getting destroyed in it. Then “Plan-T”, “I Scream”, “Khudi- a documentary”, “Chai Pani” and “Departure” are master pieces of his art.

His greatest goal is that he wants to win an Oscar for his country and he is working hard to achieve his goal and make the name of Korangi Academy shine.

Ebad Khan

The most important thing I learned from Korangi Academy, from the teachers, from the staff and from Agha Hasan Abedi, is that if ALLAH gave you a chance and made you capable of achieving something you don’t have to keep it to yourself but you should share it.

I learned to serve community from very early age because of the community service projects I did in school and Korangi Academy. I worked with many organizations like FESF Family Education Service Foundation which is an organization working for deaf people and their rights in this community; I worked with HOP House of Peace, Individual land and KYI (Karachi Youth Initiative).

I’m working on my photography skills as photography is my passion and I’m looking forward to spread awareness through my photography. ALLAH blessed me with an opportunity that I’m studying in a school like Korangi Academy from where I’m learning all those skills which will help me influencing my community positively. I have been inspired to know that real happiness is hidden in sacrifice, care and selfness spreading smiles, Medicating wounds and wiping tears is the way of world for me.
